Portrait Union paints one photograph of a dog, cat, rabbit, horse or other four-legged pet as a portrait in twelve styles, with the animal's own species, body and markings kept. Birds and small caged pets are not a good fit, because every style assumes four legs. The digital file is €4.99, a canvas €69.99.

A custom pet portrait starts with one ordinary photograph of an animal you already live with. The subject does not have to be a dog or a cat: rabbits, horses and other four-legged pets are painted the same way, from the same twelve styles, and each keeps its own species and its own anatomy under whatever cape, collar or armour the style adds. Where the line falls is worth knowing before you upload, because every style prompt is written for a four-legged sitter, so a parrot or a hamster is not a good fit. Several animals in one photograph are fine and cost nothing extra, as long as they are all gathered towards the middle of an upright shot. The painting is made from your photograph rather than from a stock animal of the same breed, and the watermarked preview is free.

The model is instructed to keep the face, the markings and the expression from your photograph. The free watermarked preview is where you decide whether it did, before anything is paid for.

Framed canvas comes in Black, Dark brown, Natural wood. Portraits are painted at 4:5, so a portrait prints at 20×25, 40×50 or 60×75 cm on gallery canvas and 20×25 or 40×50 cm framed. Every other row — the 2:3 and 3:4 uprights, the landscape sizes and the squares — is for a restored photograph, which keeps its own proportions.

How a pet photo becomes a painted portrait

Upload one clear photo of your dog, cat or other four-legged pet, choose a style, and the portrait is painted from that photo rather than from a breed template. The twelve styles are Renaissance Royal, Floral Garden, Lavender Field, Watercolor, Greek God, Samurai Warrior, GTA Style, Astronaut Explorer, Van Gogh Style, Gothic Noble, Hollywood Premiere and Mafia Boss; the same twelve are offered for people.

The portrait keeps your pet's breed, markings, fur colour, eye colour and expression. The model is instructed to keep the natural animal body as well. A dog stays on four legs and a cat stays a cat; any cape, collar or armour drapes over the real animal rather than replacing it with a human torso.

Brindle patterns, tabby stripes, tortoiseshell coats, a torn ear or a greying muzzle all come from your photo, so the result reads as your pet and not as a generic one of the same breed. A photo with several pets works too: keep them all near the middle of an upright shot, because the picture is centre-cropped to 4:5 before painting.

Which page you want next depends on the animal. The dog portrait page is written around coat patterns and the photograph a dog owner can realistically get; the cat portrait page is written around the fact that a cat will not pose. A crowned monarch of either species has its own royal pet portrait page, and for a pet who has died the pet memorial page sets out which styles suit and how to work from the photograph you have.

Frequently asked questions

What pets can I use?

Dogs, cats, rabbits, horses and other four-legged pets. The style prompts assume a four-legged animal, so birds and very small caged pets are not a good fit.

Will my pet look like themselves?

The instruction the model works under names the species before anything else, which matters more on this page than on any other: a rabbit comes back a rabbit rather than a small cat, and a horse keeps a horse's head and ears. Under that sit the breed, the markings, the coat colour, the eye colour and the expression, all carried over from your photograph. A free watermarked preview lets you judge every bit of it before you pay, and neither looking nor paying needs an account.

Can I include multiple pets?

Yes, and they do not have to be the same animal — a dog and a cat in one photograph are painted as a dog and a cat, each keeping its own markings, for the price of the one portrait. What decides whether it works is the framing rather than the number. The picture is cropped to its centre at 4:5 before anything is painted, so an animal sitting out towards the edge of a wide shot is gone before the model ever sees it.

What size canvas should I get for a pet portrait?

A pet portrait is painted at 4:5, so it prints on gallery canvas at 20×25, 40×50 or 60×75 cm, or framed at 20×25 or 40×50 cm. Which one suits depends on the animal: a cat or a terrier reads well at 40×50 cm, while a large dog photographed close up earns the 60×75 cm. The three gallery sizes are €69.99, €119.99 and €179.99.

Can I get a pet portrait printed on canvas?

Yes, any of the twelve styles. A gallery wrap starts at €69.99 and a framed canvas at €129.99, and the watermark-free digital file comes with the print rather than being bought again. It is made once you have ordered it rather than taken off a shelf, so leave two to three weeks between paying and hanging it. The canvas print page describes how each construction is built and what turns up in the box.
