Getting started.
What kinds of subjects can I turn into portraits?
Anything with a face. Pets — dogs, cats, rabbits, horses, parrots — couples, whole families, kids, and yourself. The studio supports up to 6 subjects in a single composition.
What makes a good source photo?
Front-facing, well-lit, in focus. Eyes visible. Avoid heavy backlighting, dark shadows over the face, or angles where you can only see one ear. Phone photos work — you don't need a professional camera.
How long does a portrait take?
Each generation takes 30 to 60 seconds. The full preview round (2 generations) typically completes in under 2 minutes. HD upscaling adds about 15 seconds when you download.
Do I need to sign up before generating?
No. Every visitor gets one free preview without an account. You only need to create one when you want to download HD or order a print.
Styles & quality.
How many styles are available?
Nine, currently: Renaissance Royal, Greek God, Samurai Warrior, Grand Theft Auto, Astronaut Explorer, Van Gogh, Gothic Noble, Hollywood Premiere, and Mafia Boss. Each is a distinct, hand-tuned pipeline — not a filter on top of the same base.
Can I request a custom style?
Studio plan customers can submit style requests. The most-requested styles (Baroque, Cyberpunk, Watercolor, Pixar) are on our 2026 roadmap.
What resolution do I get?
Generation is 1024 × 1280 (4:5). HD download is 4096 × 5120 — enough to print at 75 × 100 cm without visible pixelation. Master files are delivered as PNG.
How does face preservation actually work?
The pipeline weights identity-relevant features (eye spacing, nose shape, jaw geometry, fur pattern for pets) much more strongly than the style transfer.
Payments & credits.
Are there subscriptions?
None. Every pack is one-time. Credits never expire, never auto-renew, and we don't run promotional re-engagement emails. Buy what you need and leave.
What payment methods do you accept?
Through Stripe: Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Apple Pay, Google Pay, SEPA Direct Debit (EU), iDEAL, Bancontact, Klarna, and Cash App. Receipts are emailed automatically.
Can I gift a portrait?
Yes. At checkout, choose "Gift this" — we'll send the recipient a stylized email with a redemption code. They pick the photo and style themselves.
What's the refund policy?
Failed generations don't consume credits — your balance is automatically restored. EU customers retain the 14-day right of withdrawal under Directive 2011/83/EU on unused credits. For other issues email hello@portraitunion.com within 30 days.
Prints & shipping.
Where do prints ship from?
Through Gelato's global production network — orders are routed to the nearest facility. EU prints are produced in Germany, Spain, or the Netherlands. US orders in California, Texas, or New York.
How long does shipping take?
3–5 business days within the EU and US. 5–7 business days for AU, JP, CA. 7–10 business days for the rest of the world. Tracking number is emailed when the order ships.
Is shipping really free?
Yes. Worldwide. Including framed canvas. There are no fuel surcharges or remote-area fees.
What if my print arrives damaged?
Photograph it, email us, we send a replacement. No returns required for damaged-in-transit cases.
Privacy & rights.
Are my photos used to train AI?
Never. Your uploads are not used as training data — not by Portrait Union, and we contractually require this of our generation provider (Google Gemini).
Who owns the generated portrait?
You do. The portrait file is yours under a perpetual, worldwide, royalty-free license — including commercial use. Print it, sell it, tattoo it. Your call.
Are you GDPR compliant?
Yes. We're a European company. You can export and delete all your data from your account settings. Data Protection Officer reachable at hello@portraitunion.com.
Can I delete my account?
Yes, immediately, from account settings. All photos, generations, and personal data are erased within 24 hours. Print orders in production are not affected.
Troubleshooting.
The portrait doesn't look like my pet — what happened?
Usually the source photo. Try a clearer, front-facing shot with both eyes visible and good light on the face. If the result is still off, regenerate — the second attempt is often noticeably better.
Generation failed mid-way.
Your credit is automatically refunded. Refresh the page and retry. If it fails twice, the source image is probably triggering a content-safety filter — try cropping more tightly to the face.
I never received my magic-link email.
Check spam first (the sender is hello@portraitunion.com). If still missing after 5 minutes, request another. Some corporate email systems reject magic-link emails entirely — we recommend a personal address.
