A royal pet portrait is painted from one clear photograph of your dog or cat. The animal is seated on a brocade cushion under a velvet cape in crimson, blue or green, with a crown beside it or a jewelled collar at its neck, lit with warm golden glazes and Rembrandt lighting so that the surface shows brushwork rather than photographic smoothness. Breed, markings, fur and eye colour all come from the photograph, and the animal keeps its own four-legged body: the cape drapes over a real dog or cat sitting or lying as it does in life, never over a human torso and never on hind legs. Greek God is the second royal reading, with laurels and ivory drapery on marble. The free preview shows which cape colour, cushion, jewellery and background your pet was given before anything is paid for.

How a dog or cat photo becomes a royal portrait
Upload one photo of your dog or cat and choose Renaissance Royal. The pet is painted as a monarch of the old courts: seated on a brocade cushion, a velvet cape over the shoulders, a crown beside them or a jewelled collar at the neck. The cape comes in crimson, blue or green, and the light is warm and golden, in the manner of old-master portraiture.
The animal stays an animal. The model is instructed to drape the cape over the pet's real body in a real sitting or lying pose, with no human shoulders or torso underneath and no standing on hind legs. Breed, markings, fur colour, eye colour and expression are kept from the photo, so a Jack Russell is still your Jack Russell, only crowned.
Cape colour, cushion, jewellery and background vary with each generation, so the preview you receive is its own picture rather than a fixed template. Greek God is the other royal reading: a laurel wreath, ivory and gold drapery, marble columns and a sky behind, which suits a calm, upright cat or a dog that sits well.

Which pets does it work for?

Will my pet still look like themselves?
Yes. Breed, markings, fur colour, eye colour and expression are kept from the photo. The crown and cape are added around the animal, not instead of it.
Does the crown need a particular kind of photograph?
It needs headroom. The crown, the cape and the jewelled collar are added above and around the animal, so the painting has to have somewhere to put them: use an upright photo with the pet near the middle and not filling the frame to its edges. Beyond that the requirement is only a visible face in decent light, since the picture is cropped to its centre before anything is painted.
Can I have two pets in one royal portrait?
Upload an upright photo with both near the middle and both are painted, each with their own markings, at no extra cost.
Is it suitable as a memorial?
