A custom pet portrait costs about $150 to $750 hand-painted for one pet, depending on size; about €36 for a digital file or €63 to €153 for an unframed canvas from an online illustration shop; and €4.99 for the file or €69.99 for a canvas here. Every outside price was read from the seller's page on 27 October 2026.

Three things set the price of a pet portrait: who or what does the painting, how big the finished object is, and how many animals are in it. A hand-painted original pays for an artist's working time and the materials of a single physical painting, which is why the price climbs with every inch and every extra pet, and why the wait is measured in weeks. An online illustration shop makes the picture digitally and prints it, so its file is cheap and the print carries most of the cost. Portrait Union paints with an image model in under a minute, which is why the file costs €4.99 and the watermarked preview costs nothing. On canvas the three converge, because what you pay there is mostly the canvas, the frame and the post. Compare the same size, framed or unframed, with shipping included or not, or the cheaper price may simply be the smaller object.

The model is instructed to keep the face, the markings and the expression from your photograph. The free watermarked preview is where you decide whether it did, before anything is paid for.

What a pet portrait costs, three ways

Hand-painted. Two working studios publish their prices. Melissa Smith Art paints pets in acrylic on stretched canvas: $150 for a 5×7 or 6×6 in painting, $300 for one pet at 11×14 in ($400 with three), and $750 for one pet at 24×36 in. Adventure Painter paints in oil on a cradled panel: $265 at 12×9 or 10×10 in and $400 at 14×11 or 12×12 in, with one to two weeks to paint and a few more days for the oil to dry before it ships.

Illustration shops. These make the portrait digitally and print it. Shown to a visitor in Europe on 27 October 2026, during a sale, Crown & Paw charged €35.95 for a digital download of a costume portrait, €62.95 for an unframed 8×10 in canvas, €98.95 at 16×24 in and €152.95 at 24×36 in, with framed canvases from €116.95. West & Willow, in US dollars and also on sale, charged $77 for a framed 8×10 in print, $154 at 18×24 in, and $46 for an 8×10 in print without a frame. Shop prices move with sales and with the country you buy from, so read them as a range rather than a quote.

Portrait Union. The digital file is €4.99. A gallery canvas is €69.99 at 20×25 cm (8×10 in), €119.99 at 40×50 cm and €179.99 at 60×75 cm, and a framed canvas starts at €129.99, with shipping included to 35 countries. On canvas that sits in the same range as the shops; where it differs is the file, and that the watermarked preview is free, so you see the finished painting before paying anything. The pricing page lists every size, and the canvas print page explains how each one is built.

Which one to choose. A hand-painted original is the right buy when the object itself matters: brush marks you can touch, a person's reading of the animal, and a piece that exists once. An illustration shop or an image model is the right buy when you want your pet in a costume or a setting, quickly, at a price that leaves room for a frame. For a pet who has died, the pet memorial page explains which styles suit; for the animal itself, the AI pet portrait page is where to start.

Where these prices come from

Each outside price above was read on 27 October 2026 from the seller's own product page, in the currency that page showed: US dollars for the two painters and for West & Willow, euros for Crown & Paw. Sale prices are given as sale prices. Portrait Union has no connection with any of these sellers, and nothing here is a review of their work; the point is to show what the market charges, so a price can be judged before it is paid.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a hand-painted pet portrait cost so much more?

Because the price is mostly an artist's time. A painted original is built up by hand over days or weeks, in paint on a canvas or a panel that exists once, and both studios checked for this page charge more for every step up in size and for every extra animal. A digital portrait, whether an illustration shop's or one painted here by an image model, costs little to make again, so the file is cheap and most of the price of a print is the canvas, the frame and the post.

Does a second pet cost extra?

At a hand-painting studio, usually yes: at Melissa Smith Art an 11×14 in painting is $300 for one pet and $400 for three. Here it does not. Several animals in one photograph are painted together for the price of one portrait, as long as they are all near the middle of an upright shot, because the picture is cropped to 4:5 before it is painted.

Is shipping included in these prices?

Portrait Union's canvas prices include shipping to 35 countries. The outside prices on this page are the product prices the sellers showed; delivery was not compared, so check it at each seller's checkout before comparing totals.

Why is the digital file so cheap here?

Because an image model paints it in under a minute from your photograph, with no artist's hours to pay for. That is also why the watermarked preview can be free: you see the finished portrait before you pay €4.99 for the clean file, and nothing is charged if you walk away.

How current are these prices?

Every outside price was read from the seller's own product page on 27 October 2026, in the currency that page showed, and the date is printed on the page so you can judge how fresh it is. Shops run sales often, so treat the figures as a range rather than a quote.
